Ohio Stars is a series of photoquilts using the Ohio Star quilt pattern, a traditional nine-patch quilt block. The block is a series of alternating squares and Xs, which create a star when contrasting colors are used for each shape. Instead of alternating light and dark colors, I alternate the original image with its reflection. This creates kaleidoscopic reflections as each shape meets its mirror image on every edge. In the larger quilts, pieces are cut from different parts of each print causing the pattern to evolve across the length of the quilt, creating subtle changes in the pattern.
This quilt block design has been around at least as long as the state of Ohio itself. Although known by many names, Ohio Star is probably the most common. Being the Ohio Star, it only makes sense to incorporate pictures from Ohio in this series of photoquilts. Each photo is of a place in Ohio that is in some way important and beautiful to me.
